Lesson 1.2: Creating a Research Question

Today you will be working in groups to form a research question about our community that you would like to answer throughout the course of this unit.

What is a research question?

  • A big general question that you want to know more about.

  • A question that is not easily answered.

  • It is not black and white, there are many factors that effect it.

  • In math we often ask research question in the form, "Is there a relationship between....?"

What makes a good research question?

  • It should be about something you're interested in.

  • You should be able to collect multiple pieces of data about this topic.

  • You can think of several different ways to answer the question.

Can you give me some examples?

  • Is there a relationship between student achievement and music participation?

  • Is there a relationship between test scores and academic achievement?

  • Is there a relationship between social media and homework completion?

  • Is there a relationship between nutrition and age?

Why are these good research question?

Because you could collect all sorts of data to try to answer them!

For example:

Is there a relationship between test scores and academic achievement?

I could collect data on:

- Algebra Regents Scores

- Living Environment Regents Scores

- College acceptance

- Overal grade average

- Individual class grades

- Age

- High School Deploma Type

- SAT scores

Ok we have our question. Now what?!

  1. Fill out this survey to submit your research question.

  2. Begin doing some background research.

  3. Begin creating a list of things that will help you answer your question.
