Dance Projects
We begin the year by exploring shapes and levels. Inspired by the Dance Writer App, students will create shapes using different levels to represent the letters in their name. In groups of two or three, students will then combine their individual name dances to create a short piece of choreography. Their choreography will incorporate choreographic elements like repetition, tempo, space, and stillness.
Students were assessed on the following outcomes: Create, Collaborate, Communicate, Plan, and Be Precise
We extended our understandings of shapes and levels by exploring how to connect shapes through movement pathways and how different parts of our body can be used to get from one place to another. These dances were Inspired by the work of world renowned choreographer, Shen Wei. We watched excerpts of his works, Map, and the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. These works inspired us to plan out our dances by creating a map of the pathways that the dancer will travel and the levels she will use. The dancers then created a dance that turned the visual map into physical movement.
Students were assessed on the following outcomes: Create, Plan, and Be Precise
Each student chose a feeling a wrote a short story about a time where they felt that feeling deeply. They then explored how that feeling travels through their body: where it starts, where it ends, how it travels in between. They created short dances where they expressed their feeling through exaturated movement using their stories as inspiration and not literal interpretations. We then watched sections of Alvin Ailey's Revelations for inspiration. This work inspired us to create dance that had multiple sections with multiple feelings.
Students were assessed on the following outcomes: Create, Collaborate, Communicate, Plan, and Be Precise
