Lesson 1.6: Frequency Tables

Types of Data:

Categorical: (qualitative) Data that describes or is a quality. Responses are usually categories or one word answers.

Examples:

- Super power

- Pets

- Gender

- State

- Zipcode

Numerical: (quantitative) Data that can be measured or quantified. Responses are usually numbers.

Examples:

- Shoe size

- Age

- Height

- Hours of sleep

Organizing Categorical Data:

To organize categorical data we often use Frequency Tables like the one below.

  • The shaded cells are called marginal frequencies. They are located around the "margins" of the table and represent the totals of the rows or columns.

  • The non-shaded cells within the table are called joint frequencies. Each joint cell is the frequency count of response from both types of categorical data.
